The electric department handles power, fixtures, distribution, and control — executing the DP's lighting design and owning all electrical responsibilities on set.
The electric department — English electric department — provides the light and the power. They do not design: the design comes from the cinematographer, the department implements it and is responsible for ensuring it is safely set up.
The Positions
- Gaffer — leads the department, translates the lighting design into equipment and positions.
- Best Boy — organizes equipment, personnel, and power.
- Electricians set up, align, and operate.
- Generator Operator on the generator.
The Demarcation from the Grip Department
Electric provides the sources, Grip shapes and blocks them: flags, diffusion, reflectors, and anything that takes away light belongs to the Grip department. The separation seems arbitrary and is clear on set — anyone who blurs it will find two departments wanting to set up the same stand.
Responsibility
The department is responsible for the electrical installation on set: circuit protection, RCDs, cable management, load. This is the part that is non-negotiable, even under time pressure.
