The re-renting of hired equipment to a third party — typically prohibited by contract and a liability risk without the owner's consent.
Sub-Rental means: Rented equipment is rented out again. From the production's perspective, this looks like an opportunity to utilize downtime — from the rental agreement's perspective, it is usually prohibited.
Why it is regulated
- Liability. The renter is liable for the equipment. If they rent it out again, they remain liable — for someone they do not control.
- Insurance. Policies cover the agreed-upon use. An unannounced sub-rental can void coverage.
- Condition. The rental company cannot verify what happened in the interim.
The legitimate case
With written consent from the rental company, with adjusted insurance, and with a clear agreement on who is responsible for damages. This is the difference between an arrangement and a breach of contract — and it becomes relevant in the event of damage, not before.
