One rental house borrows gear from another to fulfill a client order — common during peak demand or for specialty equipment.
Cross-Rental is the rental between rental houses. If a house receives a request it cannot fulfill from its own inventory, it rents the missing items from a colleague and re-rents them in its own name.
When it happens
- Peak Loads. In peak season, certain camera models are booked out regionally.
- Special Equipment that is not worthwhile for a house to own — a single specialized zoom, a specific anamorphic set.
- Geography. For a shoot far outside its usual area, local rentals are made instead of transporting equipment.
What the Production Notices
Ideally, nothing: the point of contact, invoice, and liability remain with the contracted house. It becomes noticeable if the condition or accessories differ — which is why the confirmation should state which items are coming from cross-rental, and the prep date should be scheduled accordingly.
