A business that rents rather than sells film equipment, providing maintenance, prep facilities, and technical support — the model behind nearly every production's gear.
A rental house rents out film equipment. This sounds like logistics and is the economic foundation of the industry: Hardly any production owns its cameras, lenses, or lights — they rent them for the duration of the shoot.
Why things are rented
- Utilization. A set of lenses that is in use for six weeks on one production and then sits on the shelf for eleven months is not economical.
- Maintenance. Lenses need to be measured, adjusted, and cleaned; this is ongoing operation, not project expenditure.
- Up-to-dateness. Camera technology becomes obsolete quickly. Renting shifts this risk.
- Replacement. A failure on a shooting day is swapped out, not repaired.
What justifies the price
Not the equipment itself, but what surrounds it: prep rooms, workshops, accessibility, depth of inventory. A cheaper offer without these services shifts work and risk to the production — this only becomes apparent on the shooting day.
