Second AD: builds the call sheet, manages cast from check-in to set, and maintains communication between basecamp and the shooting location.
The Second Assistant Director works where the 1st AD isn't: at basecamp, with paperwork, and with the cast. If everything runs smoothly on set, it's often because someone made phone calls beforehand.
Responsibilities
- Scheduling. The daily plan for the following day — who is where and when, which scenes, which extras, when for makeup, when for wardrobe. Created in the evening and approved by production.
- Cast Management. Calling actors, guiding them through makeup and wardrobe, ensuring they are on set on time. An actor who finishes too early waits — one who arrives too late costs the production.
- Time Tracking. Arrival, breaks, wrap. The basis for payroll and for determining if overtime pay is due.
On larger productions, the role is divided: one 2nd AD on set, another at basecamp.
