The second hot meal served when the shoot day exceeds the contractually set hours — typically six hours after the first meal.
The second meal is incurred when the full penalty period passes again after the first break. In US contracts, this is usually six hours; after that, the penalty payment resumes.
What it says about the day
A second meal is a signal that the day is going off the rails. Productions consciously factor them in for night shoots and long location days – if they become due unplanned, the shooting schedule was too tight.
Practicalities
It is announced and ordered before it is due because catering needs advance notice. The assistant director therefore usually reports the need to production hours in advance – even at the risk that it might not be needed after all.
