Creative or operational relevance to directing
Second AC: clapper/loader, camera reports, magazine and card changes, floor marks. The role that keeps the camera department organized.
The Second Assistant Camera — in English the 2nd AC or Clapper Loader — holds the department together while the 1st AC is at the lens.
Responsibilities
- Clapperboard. Scene, shot, take — and the clap that synchronizes picture and sound. Announced during sound recording, held open in frame for MOS.
- Camera Report. Which shot, which lens, which aperture, which take is a print. This is the document that editing and post-production work with.
- Material. Card or magazine changes, handover to DIT or lab, labeling. A mislabeled magazine costs a shooting day.
- Setting Marks. Gaffer tape or marks on the floor for actors to step on — the basis for the focus puller to have any chance at all.
The usual path leads from Trainee via 2nd AC to 1st AC. The position is therefore also the place where one learns how a camera department functions before taking responsibility for the image.
