The 2nd 2nd AD is not a separate tier but a duplication: As soon as a production has a significant distance between base camp and shooting location, or works with large crowd scenes, one person can no longer manage both sides.
The Division
Usually, the 2nd AD remains at the base camp with cast, scheduling, and paperwork, while the 2nd 2nd is on set — briefing the extras, bringing actors to set, tracking time. This is reversed for night shoots or location changes on the same day.
Why the Position Exists
Because schedules and paperwork don't wait. Callsheets for the next day are created while shooting is still ongoing on set. If the second person is missing, one of these tasks will be done at night — and the mistake will appear in the schedule the next morning.

When we talk about "coverage," it’s not just about getting enough shots. For us on set, it’s the strategic planning of how we’re going to capture every single beat of a scene, from the widest establishing shot down to the tightest insert. It’s about making sure we have options in the edit, that we can cut between different angles, different focal lengths, different performances. A good coverage plan means we’re not scrambling later, trying to fix something that wasn't shot properly. It’s about anticipating what the director and the editor will need to tell the story effectively, and that includes thinking about how we’ll move the camera – maybe a Steadicam for a fluid walk-and-talk, a dolly for a classic push-in, or even just a handheld for that raw, immediate feel. We're always thinking about the light, too, how it plays on the actors, how we can shape it with flags and bounces, and how that fits into the overall visual narrative we're building. It’s a constant dance between the creative vision and the practical realities of getting it all done on time and on budget.
