The time talent must arrive at basecamp — early enough for hair, makeup, wardrobe, and travel to set, not their on-camera call.
The Talent Call is calculated backward: from the scene in which an actor is needed, through travel time to set, through wardrobe, through makeup — and the result is the arrival time at basecamp.
Why it's calculated precisely
Because both mistakes are expensive. Too late means a complete set is waiting. Too early means an actor is in makeup, ready, and spends two hours in the trailer — with elaborate makeup, the result doesn't even last that long.
Practical considerations
- Elaborate makeup can take three hours or more; the call is then in the middle of the night.
- For child actors, legal regulations limit their presence — the call is not a buffer there, but an upper limit.
- The 2nd AD reports changes as soon as they are foreseeable. A postponed call that only comes in the morning is not a call.
