Pyrotechnic smoke composition that rapidly generates dense clouds — used for fires, explosions, and smoke trails on set. Requires a permit.
A smoke pot is a pyrotechnic device: It is ignited, burns, and produces a large amount of smoke in a short time. Unlike a smoke machine, it cannot be controlled or turned off — what burns will burn out.
What it is used for
- Fire situations — smoke from windows, doors, vehicles.
- Explosions where smoke is part of the effect.
- Colored smoke for signals, demonstrations, military scenes.
What is involved
It belongs in the hands of the pyrotechnician: Permits, storage, ignition, and disposal are regulated. This includes fire watch, wind direction, and — in interiors — smoke detectors, which must be deactivated beforehand and not taped over. The smoke is also not harmless: respiratory protection for those involved is part of the planning.
