Diffuse smoke or haze filling a space to make light beams visible — not a foreground effect, but the foundation of the overall lighting mood.
Atmosphere Smoke is smoke that is not intended to be seen. It fills the space evenly, making visible what would otherwise remain invisible: light cones, depth staging, the air between foreground and background.
Distinction
- Haze — finest mist, lasts for hours, even. The standard for atmosphere.
- Fog — denser, visible as wisps, moves and dissipates. For effects within the shot.
- Ground Fog — cooled, sinks, stays low.
On Set
The density is adjusted against the monitor, not by eye — what is barely visible in the room can already be too much in the image. And it must be maintained throughout the shooting day: every opened door costs density, and a connection between two takes with different smoke densities will be immediately noticeable in the edit.
