The secondary, independent backup rope that catches rather than bears load — required wherever a fall is possible.
The safety line is redundant, and that is its purpose: it hangs parallel to the load-bearing system, carries no load during normal operation, and only catches if the main system fails.
What defines it
- Separate anchor point. A second line at the same point secures against rope breakage, not against the failure of the point itself.
- Separate path. It does not run through the same pulleys as the main rope.
- Limited fall distance. It is kept short so that a fall does not gain momentum.
In the frame
It is obtrusive. This is precisely why it is the line most likely to be scrimped on — and the point that a safety briefing focuses on. It is only removed if another system takes over the same function, not because it is visible in the frame.
