Owns on-set safety: inspects rigs and builds, co-leads safety meetings, and has authority to halt any shot regardless of the shooting schedule.
The Safety Supervisor is the position that has the authority to say no. On productions involving stunts, working at heights, vehicle shots, or effects, this role is filled, and their instructions take precedence over the shooting schedule.
Responsibilities
- Risk assessment before shooting, motive by motive and scene by scene.
- Approval of setups — rigs, scaffolding, fall protection, vehicle mounts.
- Safety briefing in conjunction with the responsible department.
- Stop of action. In case of danger, shooting is halted without consultation.
Why Independence Matters
Because the pressure on set always goes in one direction: the day is short, the light is fading, the stunt performer is ready. A position that is not responsible for these considerations is the only one that can make a clean decision.
