The Pyrotechnician is one of the few positions on set whose authority does not stem from hierarchy but from official permission. Without them, the effect does not happen, and neither does it happen against them.
What They Are Responsible For
- Planning and Permitting — Notification to authorities, coordination with the fire department, storage and transport of charges.
- Setup of effects, wiring, ignition system.
- Clearance. They determine safety distances, positions, and escape routes — and they ignite.
- Disarming if an effect did not trigger. A dud is not removed from the stage.
The Chain of Command
With pyrotechnic effects, the chain of command runs in reverse compared to the normal case: the director requests, the pyrotechnician gives clearance, and every participant is allowed to abort. This is not a rule of politeness but the reason why the profession requires a license.
