An interior location prepared in advance as a backup when an exterior shoot is rained out — planned ahead, never improvised.
Weather Cover is the Plan B for outdoor shoots: an interior scene that is set up, cast, and approved and ready to go, should the weather make the planned day impossible.
What Makes a True Cover
- It is prepared. Location booked, cast scheduled, equipment ready. A scene that one "could also shoot" is not a cover.
- It is independent. It must not rely on material that was supposed to be created on the lost day.
- It is close. The switch must be possible within half a day.
The Decision
It's made early — usually the evening before or early in the morning, jointly by the director, production, and 1st AD. Anyone who waits until noon loses both days: the outdoor shoot and the cover.
