Represents the production design on set: decides what can be changed within a live shot and maintains visual consistency throughout the shooting day.
The Standby Art Director is responsible for the set on location while the Art Director and Set Dresser are already working on the next location. They decide what can be changed—and what cannot.
Why This Requires a Decision
Because requests constantly come in on set: the camera needs the dresser two meters further away, lighting wants the lamp removed, sound would prefer the rug positioned differently. Each individual change is plausible, and in total, the room will be different after three hours than it was in the previous scene.
Responsibilities
- Approve or reject changes to the set design.
- Maintain continuity between shots and shooting days, using photographs.
- Dismantle—at the end, the space is returned to the condition stipulated by the location agreement.
- Handle minor adjustments themselves, rather than waiting for the department.
