On-set costume crew member who dresses, adjusts, and changes wardrobe during shooting while maintaining continuity — the costume equivalent of a makeup touch-up artist.
The Costume Standby is the position on set: they adjust between takes, assist with quick changes, and ensure the costume looks the same in the third take as it did in the first.
Work Between Takes
- Adjustments. Collars, cuffs, hems, pleats — after every take, referencing the continuity photo.
- Quick Changes. When a character changes wardrobe in a short period, it's rehearsed like choreography, often done by two people.
- Effects. Wetting, soiling, blood — always returning to the same state.
- Weather. Coats between takes, cooling in heat, drying.
Continuity
After each take, a photograph is taken before anything is changed. These photos go into the costume bible and are what the department relies on for the next shot.
