Short for pyrotechnics and for the pyrotechnician — on set typically called out as "Pyro standing by" or "Pyro is hot.
Pyro is the set shorthand and refers to the effect, the material, or the person, depending on the context. It appears primarily in announcements, which are formalized because safety is involved.
The Announcements
- "Pyro steht" (Pyro is set) — the effect is rigged but not yet armed.
- "Pyro ist scharf" (Pyro is armed) — from this point on, the area is cordoned off and will not be entered.
- "Pyro ist entschärft" (Pyro is disarmed) — only after this may someone approach the effect.
Between the second and third announcements, no one moves within the effect's range without consultation — not even briefly, not even to retrieve something. The most frequent incidents occur not during the effect itself, but before and after.
