Photo documentation of a location: wide shots, details, access routes, power sources, and parking. Basis for the location decision and later for production planning.
Location photos are taken during scouting and are needed twice: first, to decide if the location is suitable — and then to plan the shooting day without having to revisit it.
What is photographed
- The space from all directions, not just the attractive view. The back side, in particular, determines where lighting and equipment can be placed.
- Access and parking — for vehicles, trailers, and generators.
- Power. Meter box, fuse box, access. A location without sufficient power connection needs a generator, which in turn requires a parking space.
- Sources of interference — street noise, flight path, nearby restaurants.
- Sun position, noted with the time of day.
Photos without the time and compass direction are almost worthless for planning: The light that looked so good in the picture will be in a different place on the shooting day at ten o'clock.
