Location Release

location location scout location shoot

Written permission from a property owner to shoot on-site and commercially exploit the footage. Without it, the material has no legal clearance for use.

The Location Release is the part of the location agreement that is crucial for distribution: the consent that the recordings of the location may be shown, distributed, and used worldwide indefinitely in the film.

Why a verbal agreement is not enough

Because broadcasters, distributors, and insurers require proof. When a film is cleared, a chain of rights is checked — music, brands, people, locations. If a release is missing, the scene may have to be cut after the film is finished.

Special Cases

  • Public spaces do not require owner permission, but a filming permit from the authorities.
  • Recognizable brands, artworks, and architecture may carry their own rights, independent of property rights.
  • Co-owners — in the case of condominium ownership, the resident does not necessarily have to sign.
