Creative or operational relevance to directing
Fills roles: finds actors, organizes auditions, pitches talent, and negotiates with agencies. A standalone creative position, not administrative.
The Casting Director casts the film. This is not an intermediary activity, but a creative one: who is suggested significantly influences what the film will become.
The Process
- Role Analysis with the director and production — what the character needs, not how they look.
- Suggestion Lists from personal knowledge, agencies, viewing material.
- Casting — Invitation, scene selection, recording, often with their own casting director.
- Callbacks and chemistry reads, because casting rarely works in isolation.
- Negotiation of availability and terms with agencies, in conjunction with production.
What Defines the Work
Memory. A good Casting Director knows hundreds of actors not just by name, but as possibilities — and remembers someone for a supporting role whom they saw three years ago in a different casting.
