Supports the Casting Director by reviewing submissions, coordinating schedules, recording auditions, and maintaining cast lists.
The Casting Associate keeps a casting office running. For a feature film with fifty speaking roles, this involves several hundred invitations, recordings, and feedback sessions.
The Tasks
- Screening. Pre-sorting submitted materials so the Casting Director doesn't have to review everything themselves.
- Scheduling — filling casting days, coordinating with agencies, booking rooms.
- Recording. Castings are filmed; the image, sound, and captions must be usable because the director and production will make decisions based on them later.
- Maintaining Lists — who has been seen, who has declined, who is available, who is the second choice.
The Sensitive Part
Handling applicants. A casting is a job application situation for those invited; rejections, waiting times, and the handling of recordings are part of the reputation a casting office has.
