Creative or operational relevance to directing
Large propeller or turbine that delivers directional wind on set — for hair, fabric, dust, and smoke. Noise levels are so high that dialog in wind scenes is almost always ADR'd.
The wind machine is a set-sized fan: from a small Ritter fan on a tripod to a turbine on a trailer that can move an entire street. It doesn't create wind as weather, but wind as visible movement — hair, coat hem, curtain, stirred-up dust. Without it, a storm in the frame would be static.
Wind is seen on things, not in the air
That's why the actor isn't just blown on. Something in the frame needs to react: leaves, paper, a cloth, a flag, dust. And it needs irregularity — constant wind from a propeller looks like a propeller. The gust is created by panning the machine or by starting and stopping it during operation.
On Set
- The sound is gone. Even small machines drown out all dialogue. Wind scenes are shot as images and dubbed in ADR.
- Anything loose flies. Before starting, the set is secured — flags, diffusion frames, and stands are the most common damage cases.
- Distance instead of power. A large machine far away looks more natural than a small one up close, because the airflow arrives wider and less directed.
