Playback of picture or sound on set that performers and camera reference — music for a dance number, a practical TV in frame, or a preview image for eyeline matching to later VFX.
Video Playback means: something is played back on set while shooting, and everyone aligns themselves to it. These are three very different tasks, often handled by one person.
The Three Cases
- Playback for the Performers. Music for a dance or singing number, dialogue track for lip-sync scenes. It must play back picture-synchronously and run with timecode, otherwise the movement in the edit won't match the music.
- Playback On-Screen. Everything that is visible on a monitor, television, or phone within the frame. Here, the frame rate is crucial: a monitor not synchronized to the camera will show bars or flicker. Therefore, such devices run via a Genlock signal.
- Playback as Reference. A previz or a previous take so that performers know where to look, and the camera knows where a VFX element will be placed later.
The difference from Video Village is the direction: Video Village shows the crew what the camera sees. Playback shows the set what it should adhere to.
