The Touch-Up Artist is on set, not in the trailer. Their job begins when the makeup is finished: Over the course of a shooting day, every face changes — skin oils, sweat, spotlight heat, rubbed-off makeup.
The Process
Between takes, in the moment after "Thank you, cut" and before the next "Roll camera." These are often thirty seconds for dabbing, repowdering, and fixing a stray hair — and during which they must not be disturbed.
What is Paid Attention To
- Shine on the forehead and nose, which becomes immediately visible under spotlights.
- Continuity of effects — blood, dirt, and sweat must look the same between takes, not fresh.
- The monitor. What is barely visible on the face can be noticeable in a close-up — and vice versa.
