On-set props: hands off/on items, swaps and resets them between takes, and maintains continuity for all objects handled by cast.
The standby props department on set is responsible for everything that is handled: glasses, weapons, telephones, newspapers, food, cigarettes. They hand items out before a take and retrieve them afterward.
The Core: Resetting
After each take, the initial state is restored — the glass to the same fill level, the newspaper to the same page, the chair to the same position. This is the work where continuity errors occur or are avoided.
What Needs Special Handling
- Food and Drinks — in multiple versions, chilled, and fresh for each take if consumed.
- Weapons. Separate rules, separate personnel, separate handover protocols — never handed out unsupervised or unchecked.
- Consumables — items that break, tear, or burn are prepared in multiple copies.
