SFX Supervisor is the common abbreviation for the Special Effects Supervisor. The three letters are the source of regular confusion: SFX stands for practical effects on set, VFX for digital effects in post-production.
How to Recognize It in Everyday Life
The SFX Supervisor stands on location and builds; the VFX Supervisor stands next to them and measures — camera data, tracking markers, HDRI. If a wall explodes and the rest of the street is digitally added, both are working on the same shot.
The Interface
This is the most expensive point in planning. A practically shot effect that VFX later has to replace costs double. A digital effect for which no reference was captured on set costs even more. That's why both sit in the same pre-production meeting.
