RED KOMODO-X

The KOMODO-X solves a problem the original KOMODO 6K had: it was small, quiet, and had a global shutter — making it the first choice wherever a large camera wouldn't fit. However, the 40 frames per second at 6K were often insufficient for the applications where such a camera is mounted. On drones, on vehicles, on parachutes, on helmets. The X is the answer to this.

The Sensor

19.9 megapixels, 6144 x 3240, Super 35 with 27.03 x 14.26 millimeters. The size corresponds to the KOMODO 6K, the sensor itself is a new development. RED specifies 16.5 stops of dynamic range, half a stop more than its predecessor. The shutter is global — the image is read out in an instant rather than line by line, thus eliminating skew during fast pans and vibrations.

Frame Rates

6K up to 80, 5K up to 96, 4K up to 120, 2K up to 240 frames per second. The doubling compared to the KOMODO 6K at full resolution is the actual reason for this body. Recording is done on CFexpress at up to 800 megabytes per second in REDCODE RAW.

Mount and Power — The Two Practical Differences

The RF mount has a locking mechanism that the KOMODO 6K lacks. Anyone who has ever attached a heavy PL lens via an adapter to an unlatlocked RF mount knows why this is not a trivial matter. PL lenses are used via RED's RF-to-PL adapter, EF lenses via the corresponding Canon adapter.

Second difference: the X directly accepts Micro V-Mount batteries like the REDVOLT Nano-V, without an adapter plate. This sounds like an accessory detail but practically determines how small the setup on a gimbal can remain.

Where Confusion Can Arise

Both spec sheets state '6K Super 35 Global Shutter'. If you order a KOMODO and need an X, you get half the frame rate and half a stop less dynamic range — and a mount without a lock. In lens and camera lists, often only 'RED Komodo' appears, even when an X is meant. When booking, the letter must be included in the order.
