Paillard Bolex H16 EL

The Paillard Bolex H16 family is one of the most iconic 16mm cameras in film history. Produced in Switzerland from 1935 (spring-driven) and from the 1970s in electrically powered versions (H16 EBM, H16 EL), it was the standard tool for indie filmmakers, documentarians, nature filmmakers, and experimental filmmakers for decades.

The H16 EL Specifically

"EL" stands for "Electric" — the body runs on battery power at a constant speed (24fps, optionally 25 or others). Predecessors were spring-driven (28 seconds of recording per wind). The EL allows for longer takes without manual winding — crucial for sync sound and extended observation shots.

Reflex Viewfinder

The H16 has an optical reflex viewfinder — the DP sees exactly what the lens sees (via a mirror prism). The price for this is light: the beam splitter that reflects the image into the viewfinder takes it away from the film. This loss must be accounted for in exposure — it is the most well-known characteristic of the Bolex and the most common reason for underexposed material for first-time users.

Bayonet

Bolex H16 Bayonet — a twist-ring bayonet family. Native lenses: Kern Switar, Kern Vario Switar, Schneider Cinegon. Adapters to PL exist for modern cine lenses, but the typical workflow remains: original bayonet glass.

Format

Standard 16mm and Super 16 (via aperture mod). The image field of the EL covers standard 16 — for Super 16, a workshop must mill out the aperture plate. Today, a standard mod at reputable Bolex service centers.

Today

In the 16mm film revival of 2024-2026, the Bolex H16 is in demand again: bodies around 800-2500 EUR on eBay, service availability in CH/DE/USA still okay (compared to other vintage bodies). Popular for music videos, commercials with a vintage look, indie documentaries.
