The makeup chair is a piece of equipment: height-adjustable so the makeup artist can work standing up, with a footrest and armrests for actors who will be sitting in it for two hours, and freely accessible from all sides.
Why the Design Matters
A normal chair forces the makeup artist into a hunched posture — over years, this is an occupational hazard. And an actor who sits uncomfortably moves; with prosthetics, this is the difference between a seated application and one that needs reworking.
The Saying
"Sitting in the chair" on set simply means: being in makeup. The time spent in it is factored into the schedule and determines the talent call — with elaborate prosthetics, it begins in the middle of the night.
