A very low-profile trailer onto which a picture vehicle is loaded so actors can perform while in motion without actually driving.
The low loader solves a recurring problem: dialogue scenes in a moving car. The prop vehicle sits on the trailer's flatbed and is towed; the actors can perform, the camera is fixed, and no one is driving while speaking their lines.
Why it's safer and better
- The actor performs instead of driving — this is visible on screen.
- Lighting can be set. Lights travel along on booms attached to the trailer.
- The camera is fixed to the vehicle or the trailer, delivering repeatable shots.
- Sound is usable because the prop vehicle's engine is off.
What to consider
The low deck is key: it keeps the prop vehicle at normal road height; otherwise, the perspective through the windshield will look wrong. The drive requires road permits, escort vehicles, and a driver who is part of the stunt team.
