Second generation of the Venus Optics 24 mm probe. Constant T8, 2:1 magnification, full frame, waterproof — and built as three separate bodies rather than one lens with adapters: direct view, 35-degree view and 90-degree periscope.

The LAOWA Pro2be 24mm T8 2x Macro is the second generation of Venus Optics' 24mm probe lens. It does not replace the first probe but stands alongside it – the optical design and construction are new.

Optics

The design comprises 33 elements in 24 groups, including 9 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements to combat chromatic aberration and 4 high-refraction elements. The aperture is a constant T8 and can be stopped down to T40, controlled by ten aperture blades. The magnification ratio is 2:1 – meaning the subject is rendered twice as large on the sensor as it is in reality.

Construction

The lens barrel measures approximately 50 centimeters with a very slim front diameter and is rotatable 360 degrees without needing to rotate the camera. The front section is waterproof up to approximately 36 centimeters immersion depth, allowing for shots in liquids without housing. The minimum focusing distance is about half a centimeter from the front lens.

Three Designs Instead of an Attachment

The most significant difference from the first generation is not a number: the Pro2be is available as three separate lenses – straight view, 35-degree view, and 90-degree periscope. In the predecessor, the redirection was an add-on solution. For scheduling, this means the viewing direction must be fixed when renting and cannot be changed on the shooting day. Those unsure if they need to look straight or around a corner should rent two.

Image Circle and Mount

The Pro2be covers full-frame and can therefore also be used on large-format sensors in cropped mode. The standard mount is PL; interchangeable mounts include Canon EF and RF, Leica L, Nikon F and Z, and Sony E.

Light Requirements

T8 is the point where this lens dictates the lighting rather than being subordinate to it. Compared to a T1.9 set, there is a loss of approximately four stops of light; compared to T2.8, it's a good three stops. If the probe is used on the same shooting day alongside fast prime lenses, it requires two different lighting setups – the change is not a lens swap but a reconfiguration.
