Operates the mobile generator: hookup, load balancing, refueling, and monitoring. The role the entire shoot's power supply depends on.
The Genny Op operates the generator that supplies power to the shoot when there is no sufficient mains connection available — which is the case for most exterior shoots and many locations.
What the Job Entails
- Load Balancing. The phases must be loaded evenly; an overloaded phase will bring the entire set to a standstill.
- Circuit Protection and RCDs for everything downstream of the generator.
- Refueling while in operation, without interrupting the shoot.
- Monitoring — temperature, fuel, load, noise.
The Sound
A generator is loud. It is therefore placed as far as possible from the set, often behind buildings or in soundproof enclosures — and the path to it is cables, which the department must lay. The trade-off between cable run and sound interference is the recurring location question for exterior shoots.
