Craft Service (Crafty): the continuous on-set supply of drinks, snacks, and coffee — separate from catering, which provides hot meals.
Crafty is the short form of Craft Service and refers to the table that is available all day: coffee, water, fruit, bars, something warm in the cold. It is not the same as catering — catering cooks the meals, Craft Service bridges the time in between.
Why it's a separate position
Because a crew working twelve hours needs energy between meals, and because the path to the craft table must be short. If it's a hundred meters away, nobody will go — and the effect is lost.
On Set
- Quiet. The table is placed outside of sound range; packaging is opened before takes, not during.
- Weatherproof. Hot drinks in the cold, plenty of water in the heat — that's the difference between a functioning crew in the afternoon and a tired one.
- Clean. Craft Service is often located next to the set; trash must be removed immediately, not after shooting wraps.
