Additional AD

Murnau AI illustration
film production

Additional AD hired for a single shoot day or block — crowd scenes, special locations, or second unit. Day-booked, not part of the core crew.

The additional AD is booked for a specific need, not for the entire production: a day with three hundred extras, a street closure, a second unit shooting in parallel.

Typical Occasions

  • Mass Scenes. Dividing extras into groups, each group needs guidance.
  • Second Unit. The second unit shoots in parallel and requires its own set management.
  • Sprawling Locations. Blockades across multiple city blocks cannot be maintained from a single position.

For budgeting purposes, this is a day rate that appears in the schedule and then disappears again. Whoever cuts it shifts the work to the permanent department — usually the 3rd AD, who would then have to be in two places at once.
